Remove CTB-Locker

What is CTB-Locker?

CTB-Locker is a dangerous ransomware virus, developed to steal user’s money and to find out personal information. Basically, this rogue silently enters a computer locks it, and encrypts the files. Afterwards, this malware presents user with a message claiming that he or she has to pay a ransom in order to regain access to the system. Unfortunately, the majority of users panic and pay the required amount of money. We, on the other hand, caution you not to do it. Most likely after you give away your savings, you will still be left with an infected PC. The better choice would be to ignore the message and to terminate CTB-Locker right away.

What does CTB-Locker do?

While there are many ways for this malicious application to enter your computer, it usually sneaks in from an unreliable page after you click some suspicious link or pop-up. Also, it is very likely that this ransomware entered the PC as a bogus codec pack or in a spam email attachment which basically means that it is capable of exploiting any system vulnerabilities. Be more careful in the future, however for now concentrate on CTB-Locker removal.

After the virus successfully infiltrates the system, it immediately establishes a connection with its remote servers and locks down the entire computer. This is done so that you could not access Internet to acquire an anti-malware. Then, the application will encrypt some of your files (.ppt, .psd, .pdf, .eps, .ai, .doc, .docx, .xls, etc.) and present you a pop-up informing that you must pay a ransom, if you wish to recover your information and to regain access to your PC. The message usually looks like this:

Your personal files are encrypted.%f0%%c0%

Your documents, photos, databases and other important files have been encrypted with strongest encryption and unique key, generated for this computer.

Private decryption key is stored on a secret Internet server and nobody can decrypt your files until you pay and obtain the private key.

According to the latest information, users are required to pay $630 in bitcoins within 96 hours via Ukash payment system. While the message certainly looks intimidating, we urge you not to comply with these demands. Keep in mind that even if you do pay the money, there are no guarantees that you will be able to access the files encrypted by CTB-Locker once more. Besides, by transferring the money you reveal your banking information which may lead to further monetary losses in the future. We advise to delete CTB-Locker from your computer and to recover the lost data from backup.
